Understanding In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a well-established assisted reproductive technology that helps couples overcome infertility. It involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body, in a laboratory setting, and then transferring the resulting embryo to the woman's uterus. We strive to provide comprehensive information about IVF, its processes, and how it can help you achieve your dream of parenthood.

The IVF Process

1. Consultation and Evaluation:

The process begins with a thorough consultation and evaluation to understand your specific needs and medical history. Our specialists will guide you through the options available and help you make an informed decision.

2. Ovarian Stimulation:

To increase the number of available eggs, hormonal medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries. This phase is closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound examinations to track follicle development.

3. Egg Retrieval:

Once the follicles have matured, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed under ultrasound guidance. A thin needle is used to extract the eggs from the ovaries, usually under sedation.

4. Sperm Collection:

On the same day as egg retrieval, a semen sample is collected from the male partner. The sperm is then processed and prepared for fertilization.

5. Fertilization:

The eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish to facilitate fertilization. In cases where there are concerns about sperm quality or quantity, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg.

6. Embryo Culture:

The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are cultured in a controlled environment for several days. The embryologists monitor their development, selecting the most viable embryos for transfer.

7. Embryo Transfer:

A selected embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. This procedure is usually painless and does not require anesthesia.

8. Luteal Phase Support:

Hormonal medications are given to support the uterine lining and enhance the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy.

9. Pregnancy Test:

About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to determine if pregnancy has been achieved.

Indications for IVF

IVF is recommended for various infertility issues, including:

  • Tubal Factor Infertility: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes preventing natural fertilization.
  • Male Factor Infertility: Low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or other sperm abnormalities.
  • Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, affecting fertility.
  • Ovulatory Disorders: Conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) that affect ovulation.
  • Unexplained Infertility: Cases where no specific cause of infertility can be identified after thorough evaluation.
  • Genetic Disorders: Couples at risk of passing on genetic conditions may use IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).

Success Rates and Factors

  • Age: Younger women typically have higher success rates due to better egg quality.
  • Cause of Infertility: Certain conditions may affect the likelihood of success.
  • Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper diet and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, can improve outcomes.
