Understanding Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is an advanced procedure that helps identify genetic abnormalities in embryos created through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). At Shishu IVF Fertility Centre, we offer detailed guidance on PGT to help you make informed decisions about your reproductive health.

The Genetic Testing Process

1. Pre-Test Counseling:

Our specialists begin with a thorough consultation to review your medical history and the reasons for considering PGT. We explain the testing procedures, benefits, and potential outcomes to ensure you are well-informed.

2. Ovarian Stimulation:

Hormonal treatments are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, increasing the chances of obtaining healthy embryos.

3. Egg Retrieval:

Using a minimally invasive procedure, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries under short general anesthesia. The fertilized eggs, called embryos, are then cultured and monitored for a few days before being transferred to the woman’s uterus (embryo transfer).

4. Sperm Insemination:

Fertilization is achieved either through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.

5. Embryo Culture and Biopsy:

Embryos are cultured for 5-6 days until they reach the blastocyst stage. A biopsy is then performed on the trophectoderm cells without harming the embryo.

6. Genetic Analysis:

The biopsied cells are analyzed in specialized laboratory to identify any chromosomal abnormalities (PGT-A) or specific genetic mutations (PGT-M).

7. Results Interpretation:

Our genetic counselors and specialists review the results and discuss any identified conditions and their implications.

8. Embryo Transfer:

Healthy embryos, free from genetic abnormalities, are transferred into the woman’s uterus. Remaining suitable embryos can be frozen for future use.

9. Pregnancy Confirmation:

A blood test called Serum Beta hCG is performed 14-15 days after the embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.

Indications for PGT

PGT is recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Advanced Maternal Age: To reduce the risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Family History of Genetic Disorders: To prevent passing on hereditary conditions.
  • Recurrent Miscarriages: To investigate genetic causes of repeated pregnancy loss.
  • Repeated IVF Failures: To identify potential genetic factors contributing to unsuccessful IVF cycles.
  • Genetic Conditions: For couples aware of specific genetic abnormalities in their family history.

Types of PGT ( Preimplantation Genetic Testing)

  • PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies): Screens for chromosomal abnormalities.
  • PGT-M (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders): Identifies single-gene defects like thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy.

Success Rates and Factors

The effectiveness of PGT depends on various factors, including:

  • Type of Test: Different tests are designed to detect specific genetic conditions.
  • Technology Used: Advanced techniques ensure accurate and comprehensive results. Genetic Counseling: Professional interpretation and counseling help in making informed decisions.
