Understanding Egg, Sperm, and Embryo Freezing

Egg, sperm, and embryo freezing are essential aspects of assisted reproductive technology that help individuals and couples preserve their fertility for the future. These processes involve freezing eggs, sperm, or embryos at extremely low temperatures to maintain their viability until needed. At Shishu IVF Fertility Centre, we provide comprehensive information about these freezing processes, their benefits, and how they can support your reproductive goals.

The Freezing Process

1. Ovarian Stimulation (for Egg and Embryo Freezing):

To increase the number of available eggs, hormonal medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries. This phase is closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasound examinations to track follicle development.

2. Egg Retrieval (for Egg and Embryo Freezing):

Once the follicles have matured, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed under ultrasound guidance. A thin needle is used to extract the eggs from the ovaries, usually under sedation.

3. Sperm Collection

On the same day as egg retrieval, a semen sample is collected from the male partner. The sperm is then processed and prepared for fertilization.

4. Fertilization (for Embryo Freezing):

The eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory dish to facilitate fertilization. In cases where there are concerns about sperm quality or quantity, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg.

5. Embryo Culture (for Embryo Freezing):

The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are cultured in a controlled environment for several days. The embryologists monitor their development, selecting the most viable embryos for freezing.

6. Freezing:

Embryos, eggs, and sperm are carefully frozen using vitrification, a rapid freezing technique that prevents ice crystal formation and ensures high survival rates. The specimens are stored in liquid nitrogen at -196°C, where they remain viable for many years.

Indications for Freezing

Freezing is recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Medical Treatments: Individuals undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, which can affect fertility, may choose to freeze their eggs, sperm, or embryos beforehand.
  • Fertility Preservation: Women who wish to delay childbearing for personal or professional reasons can opt to freeze their eggs while they are still at an optimal age.
  • IVF Cycles: Excess embryos from an IVF cycle can be frozen for future use, reducing the need for additional ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval procedures.
  • Donation Programs: Sperm, eggs, or embryos can be donated to others in need, and freezing facilitates the timing and coordination of these donations.
  • Genetic Disorders: Couples at risk of passing on genetic conditions may use IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).

Success Rates and Factors

The success rates of using frozen embryos, eggs, or sperm vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Age: Younger women typically have higher success rates due to better egg quality.
  • Freezing Method: Vitrification offers higher survival rates and better outcomes compared to older slow-freezing techniques.
  • Specimen Quality: The initial quality of the eggs, sperm, or embryos plays a significant role in the success of future treatments.
